Funeral for a Fish

We lost a dear li'l member of the family last night. Our blue betta fish, Trampolini. Taylor came up with that 0dd name. Anyway, he died. He'd been acting weird for a long time and I thought maybe his number was coming up. Sure enough, I got up this morning and found him belly up at the bottom of his bowl. It was sad. I broke the news to the boys. They took it surprisingly well. It's our first pet death.
So I thought we'd have a little funeral for him. Taylor dug a hole under our Forsythia bush in the backyard. It will be full of flowers soon, so I thought that would be a nice spot. Chase got emotional as I removed Trampolini from his bowl. Then of course, I got sad. So the two of us walked him out to the backyard with tears in our eyes. Taylor was a rock. No tears.
We plopped him carefully into the hole and covered it up.We each said something nice about him, then said a little prayer. We put a "T" on a rock for his headstone. And that was that. So... no more cleaning out his bowl. I hated doing that. But still.... kinda sad.

Now begins the filling of the backyard with dead, loved pets. We have 3 baby birds, 2 lizards and a gerbil (I think unless I threw it in the garbage) and my kids have our dogs burial plot all picked out. They also know where the neighbors have buried their animals. It is a good life lesson to teach kids. But sometimes I have dreams about Pet Cemetery and I get kinda scared.
